Radiologists rush to get new skills in three hours

A ground-breaking radiology training concept has garnered interest from locations as far afield as Kenya and Lithuania within a week of being launched.

Ricard Robledo, Business Unit Head at the Telemedicine Clinic Academy said people had rushed to sign up for a series of diagnostic imaging e-training modules that allow general radiologists to pick up vital subspecialist skills in as little as three hours.

The modules combine structured reporting with a real-case imaging viewer that replicates typical reporting scenarios within a web browser, giving radiologists the chance to hone their skills on particular subspecialist areas, Robledo said.

So far, the Academy has published two e-training modules on dementia, prepared by Dr. Nuria Bargallo of Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic, two on lumbar spine cases, by Hospital Clinic’s Dr Laura Oleaga, and two on meniscal tear, by Dr. Petra Kullnig, senior MSK radiologist at Telemedicine Clinic.

More than 20 other new online modules will go live throughout 2019. Each module includes 10 cases and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

“Finding time to acquire new skills or brush up on rusty learning, is a common problem for general radiologists”, said Robledo. “Furthermore, until now there have been few options to deal with the problem, other than taking significant amounts of time out to take appropriate training,”

The Telemedicine Clinic Academy has taken steps to overcome this challenge through the innovative use of technology, Robledo said. “This form of training forms part of the Academy’s wider mission to tackle capacity issues in radiology, and we believe it is unique in the world”, he commented.
