The Barcelona Musculoskeletal MRI Course, 12th – 13th of October, 2012

Feb 7th, 2012

The Barcelona Musculoskeletal MRI course is a hands-on course for radiologists with a special interest in musculoskeletal radiology to optimise their technique for the reporting of adult and paediatric MRI scans of the knee and shoulder.

Telemedicine Clinic is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.

The The Barcelona Musculoskeletal MRI course is designated for a maximum of (or ‘for up to’) 12 hours of European external CME credits. Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. (12 European CME credits of accredition)

Educational objectives. This course is aimed at radiologists with some experience in musculoskeletal radiology. There are three components to the course:

1.
Lecture-based and small-group training to cover the interpretation of MRI scans of the knee and shoulder in both the paediatric and adult populations. The course attendees will learn aspects of anatomy and pathology to help them interpret scans ranging from the common and simple pathologies to the rare and more complex processes.

2.
Clear, concise and comprehensive reporting of the images is as important as an understanding of the pathology. Therefore the course faculty who all have many years experience in radiology both in conventional settings and in teleradiology will provide guidance in producing a report which meets the requirements of a diverse and demanding group of referring clinicians.

3.
The hands-on component of the course will allow time for the course participants to create their own reports on cases from our comprehensive image library which will then be double reported and critically evaluated by the faculty.

Radiologists have gained improved working environment.

Jan 31st, 2012

Telemedicine Clinic helps the Värmland County Council in Sweden with elective reporting during the daytime and On-Call reporting during the night from Sydney. Both the Arvika hospital and Torsby hospital are using the service.

TMC On-Call utilizes the key benefits of highly experienced radiologists, located in Australia that due to the time zone difference are working during day time on night time cases.

Annette Andersson, Regional Director of Radiology at Värmland County Council:
- The use of TMC On-Call service makes it possible for our own radiologists in Arvika and Torsby to sleep at night, since TMC in Sydney will do the reporting.

Previously, they were on alert and got disturbed during the night, with telephone calls or needed to come in to the hospital at night. Now the radiologists have time off between 22.00 to 07.00. Our radiologists think that this has improved their working environment significantly.

During the day, TMC is an easy way for us to cope with the image reporting during casual vacancies or production peaks without having to bring in locums. This is a great added value for us and the collaboration has worked very well.

The University Hospital of Linköping in Sweden sends On-Call images to Sydney.

Jan 26th, 2012

In mid-October 2011 Linköping University Hospital in Sweden started using the TMC On-Call service from Sydney weekdays between 22.00 – 07.00.

Dr Bengt Norén, Assistant Head of Department:
- We are happy with the collaboration so far and the workflow is well established. Telemedicine Clinic has been responsive and adapted in a good way to our local procedures. The communication between Sydney and our local nurses and referring physicians (for discussion of the choice of modality, examination findings, etc.) has worked well.

He also states that the change of On-Call organization empower them to make better use of their available resources during the day and this also improves the work environment. The local young radiologists appreciate being able to sleep at night.

Telemedicine Clinic (TMC) and Linköping University Hospital are also collaborating on CT Colonography (CT colon). Work began during last fall.

Dr. Bengt Norén:
- The TMC CT Colonography service has been a relief for our Gastroenterology Section. Linköping University Hospital is currently conducting approximately 35-40 CT Colon/week and from TMC we can get help with up to 25 exams per week – the rest we will take care of ourselves in order to maintain competence.

Radiologists in Sörmland sleep well at night.

Jan 25th, 2012

The hospitals  Mälarsjukhuset, Eskilstuna (MSE) and Kullbergska sjukhuset, Katrineholm (KSK) in Sweden use the TMC On-Call service in Sydney for emergency work Sunday to Thursday from 22:00 – 07:00.

Michael Enblom, Chief of Radiology:
- The cooperation with TMC in Sydney has been excellent, few technical problems and the quality is good.

Taking advantage of the TMC On-Call service from Sydney, we can make full use of our available resources during the day,  since our own radiologists are no longer tied up with On-Call duties.

Launching TMC Extended MRI Services

Nov 15th, 2011

Örnsköldsvik Hospital in Sweden today decided to sign a long term contract with Telemedicine Clinic (TMC) for a new type of service where TMC will take care of a number of different responsibility areas within their MRI diagnostic process:

We are very happy to be able to prove that TMC can help radiology department also in more areas than reporting.

Mona Nordmar, Head of the Radiology Department, Örnsköldsvik Hospital:
- Since one year ago, the county council of Västernorrland has an agreement with Telemedicine Clinic and today we signed a supplementary agreement which includes that:

TMC is responsible for all of our MRI processes; the prioritization, selection of protocols, review and reporting. A part from this TMC will also help us develop protocols and standardization of the process. We believe this will be a successful collaboration.

The importance of ISO 27001:2005

Nov 10th, 2011

Telemedicine Clinic is 27001:2005 accredited.

ISO/IEC 27001 is an Information Security Management System (ISMS). Its full name is ISO/IEC 27001:2005 – Information technology — Security techniques — Information security management systems — Requirements.

ISO/IEC 27001 formally specifies a management system that is intended to bring information security under explicit management control.

How the standard works:
Most organizations have a number of information security controls. Without an ISMS however, the controls tend to be somewhat disorganized and disjointed, having been implemented often as point solutions to specific situations or simply as a matter of convention. The security controls in operation typically address certain aspects of IT or data security, specifically, leaving non-IT information assets (such as paperwork and proprietary knowledge) less well protected on the whole. Business continuity planning and physical security, for examples, may be managed quite independently of IT or information security while Human Resources practices may make little reference to the need to define and assign information security roles and responsibilities throughout the organization.

ISO/IEC 27001 requires that management:
· Systematically examine the organization’s information security risks, taking account of the threats, vulnerabilities and impacts;
· Design and implement a coherent and comprehensive suite of information security controls and/or other forms of risk treatment (such as risk avoidance or risk transfer) to address those risks that are deemed unacceptable; and
· Adopt an overarching management process to ensure that the information security controls continue to meet the organization’s information security needs on an ongoing basis.

The importance of ISO 9001:2008

Nov 10th, 2011

Telemedicine Clinic has once again been re-certificated for the ISO 9001:2008.

The ISO 9000 family of standards relate to quality management systems and are designed to help organizations ensure they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders. ISO 9000 deals with the fundamentals of quality management systems, including the eight management principles on which the family of standards is based. ISO 9001 deals with the requirements that organizations wishing to meet the standard have to fulfill.

Third party certification bodies provide independent confirmation that organizations meet the requirements of ISO 9001.

Summary of ISO 9001:2008:

· The quality policy is a formal statement from management, closely linked to the business and marketing plan and to customer needs.
· The quality policy is understood and followed at all levels and by all employees. Each employee works towards measurable objectives.
· The business makes decisions about the quality system based on recorded data.
· The quality system is regularly audited and evaluated for conformance and effectiveness.
· Records show how and where raw materials and products were processed, to allow products and problems to be traced to the source.
· The business determines customer requirements.
· The business has created systems for communicating with customers about product information, inquiries, contracts, orders, feedback and complaints.
· When developing new products, the business plans the stages of development, with appropriate testing at each stage. It tests and documents whether the product meets design requirements, regulatory requirements and user needs.
· The business regularly reviews performance through internal audits and meetings. The business determines whether the quality system is working and what improvements can be made. It has a documented procedure for internal audits.
· The business deals with past problems and potential problems. It keeps records of these activities and the resulting decisions, and monitors their effectiveness.
· The business has documented procedures for dealing with actual and potential nonconformances (problems involving suppliers or customers, or internal problems).

Offering sub specialist CT Colonography reporting services.

Nov 7th, 2011

Telemedicine Clinic is pleased to announce that we are the UK’s only sub specialist CT Colonography reporting service provider.

This service is used by both teaching and district general hospitals that have moved from providing barium enemas examinations to CT Colonography studies for both quality and cost reasons. Telemedicine Clinic uses state-of-the-art reporting solutions to report in both 2D and 3D modes.

All cases will be read by sub specialist radiologists with extensive experience and they will also provide regular feedback to the hospitals with regard to image quality and examination technique. 10% of the cases will be double read by a second experienced radiologist.

Telemedicine Clinic can also offer a support solution to radiology departments to assist in the buildup of in house experience and reporting competence, by providing an initial second reading service.
